What is Self-management?
Self-management is where an NDIS participant holds and administers their own plan funding. They pay providers directly, claim reimbursement from the NDIA through the myplace portal, and keep records for audit. Self-managing participants may use any provider, registered or not, and may negotiate prices above the published limits.
Self-management offers the widest choice and the greatest flexibility, including the ability to employ support workers directly. The trade-off is administrative: the participant is responsible for records, receipts and claim accuracy, and may be asked to evidence spending.
A provider serving self-managing participants invoices the participant directly and is usually paid faster than through agency channels, but carries the credit risk that a plan-managed or agency-managed arrangement does not.
